Before the Crisis Hits: What Every Family Needs to Know About Long-Term and In-Home Care
I want you to picture this:
Your loved one is still sharp, still praying over the family, fussing at the kids who need it, loving everyone, secretly slipping them “a piece of money” and keeping the house smelling like Sunday dinner. But her knees don’t work like they used to. She needs help getting to the bathroom. Bathing is getting hard. And you’re trying to work, raise your kids, and take care of her all at the same time.
That’s often the moment families call me. When the weight gets too heavy.
But real talk, you shouldn’t wait for a crisis to plan care. So let’s spend a few minutes on some of the basics many families learn while in the storm of a need that I wish I’d been able to warn them about sooner.
What Is Long-Term and In-Home Care?
It’s the kind of help that as independent men and women we don’t like to talk about, but most of us will need:
Help with bathing, dressing, and meals
Support at home or in a facility
Ongoing care after a stroke, surgery, or cognitive decline
Whether it’s a caregiver coming to the house a few times a week or moving into assisted living, it’s still long-term care.
And it’s expensive.

Medicare Won’t Cover It And Medicaid Comes with Strings Attached.
Medicare is for short-term rehab. A few weeks, maybe. But once it becomes "custodial care" help with everyday life, you’re on your own.
Medicaid? Yes, it can help. But only after you’ve spent down your assets. That means your savings, assets, and your dignity… all on the line.
Unless you plan ahead.
The Options Nobody Told Us About
There are real strategies that can help with your options as long as your implement them early and No they don’t require you to be rich:
Long-Term Care Insurance: Covers care at home or in a facility.
Hybrid Policies: Life insurance or annuities with long-term care benefits built in.
Irrevocable Trusts: Protect your home and savings before Medicaid needs kick in.
But here’s the catch: you need to qualify while you’re still healthy. I remember when I was new to the business some 16 years ago being told “Your money does not buy long term care, your health does”.
Planning = Peace
Planning for long-term care doesn’t mean you’re giving up. It means you’re stepping into your power. You have controlled things your entire life, this shouldn’t be any different.
It means your children won’t have to scramble. Your spouse won’t be left to figure it out alone. And you get to age on your terms.
Let me ask you:
If you needed care tomorrow, who would help?
Could your family afford it?
Would your house be protected?
Let’s not wait until it’s urgent. Nearly 70% of adults over 65 will need some form of long-term care and most families aren’t financially or emotionally prepared when it hits. Let’s make the plan now, while there’s still time and choice on your side.
